"Sleep under palm trees," Gracefully, softly. Clam, content. A small female padded through the brown and red hued leaves, quietly making her way into a new place, a new world. She gave only the slightest of shuffling as she made on her way, rust the easiest of the ruffling of leaves. She was still very young, at only two winters old.
Snow white fur blew gently on the clam wind, only moving the willing grass and leaves as it went. The sky was clean, clear, crisp and sunny. It was obvious though, that it would rain, if only very briefly, soon. The dark purple and black hued clouds coming from the west foretold so.
The girl gently bent her head down to lap up a bit of water from a small, clear stream. It was not often you got fresh water anymore, the Ocean was far too close. This girl though, had never been to the ocean, an was lured there by the overwhelming smell of Salt and a large, gigantic smell of water. Surely there would be others wolves in the area?
Coming from her thoughts, Never looked up to find the sky darkening. She didn't like the idea of being caught in the rain, so with a few swift strides, kept a fast, steady pace. Racing the oncoming rain.
Soft blue eyes gazed out at a small overhanging hill. It looked like there had once been a large river or stream there, that had eroded away all of the dirt from the side of the hill, and left a large gape in it's side.
She quickly took shelter under the overhang, knowing it was safe because of the tree nestled above it. The large oak would keep the dirt in place, no matter how drenched it got, and it's huge roots wouldn't budge from the ground for an instant.
The snow coated wolf sat down, contently smiling out at the scenery as drops of rain began to soak the parched earth. It would be a short shower, that was very obvious. But perhaps, she would get to hear the rain for a while, if only a short time.

Paw after paw, a soft beat heard inside her head, inside her being. Zephyr whistling and twirling a dance around all living and inanimate items. Not caring if it pressed against pine needles or a wolf pelt. To carry the scents from miles away, so dim it was almost nonestistent. Though rather than scented, it was felt. The sharp tang of seasalt would sting your nose and create a world of curiosity. Though, of course living by these rampaging waves it was just another adaptation. To learn to nose her way past the harshness to thing more importent.
"Watermint..." A lovely creamed pelt made it's way through the greenery. Head low, ears erect, tail tip barley brushing against the ground on a hunt for herbs. The rain didn't bother this speed-built female. For she grew up as a loner, and the weather was just another element that had to be fought by one's self. So it was an endurance factor more than anything.
Golden eyes unfixed, following scent rather than sight ran into a reed-looking plant. Long thick stems, with a purple bulb like flower at the end. Nipping at these plants, didn't recoil when their sharp tang hit her tongue. Being able to almost taste it though her nose, though a year of experience had taught her that it was just another thing that she'd have to get used to.
Watermint held in her jaw, raised her head and started padded in the dried up river bed. An easy mode of transportation through the territory, as well as occasionally a small fresh-water creek that ran down it. Though it lay dry in this autumn season. The gentle shift of the clouds was expressed through even more wind. She puffed up creamed coffee fur against it's beats. Looking around for a place to take shelter. 'These gusts must not harm the watermint...' for once the snow set in. This flower would die just like many of the other herbs. It was a hard time of the year, to prepare for the worst during the winter. Yet knowing that if supplies ran low, the battle would be lost.
Pace picking up, started a rushed amble through the riverbed. Keeping golden eyes peeled for the place where she would make a pit stop every now and then. It was easier to push these herbs into an overhang rather than carry them to camp before setting out again. Spotting the overhang, ducked head and cantered up to it. Turning blindly, almost ran into a white burden of fluff.
Halting dead, standing in a fleeing position, a half-sit, back legs spread muscles coiled. Looked into the eyes of a female loner. A defensive fury rose like bile in her throat, so close to her precious herbs. Looking around, saw that the rather scent-less dock leaves lay untouched in a corner, as well as the ferns. Seeing that they were unharmed, got the impression that this was a wandering wolf. Rather than one to purposely savage the little life-line that the North pack had. Though still wary, and defensive hackles were pricked. No hiding the immediate surprise and fear, in a fleeing position. Not a word was uttered, not even a spark in eye. Other than blunt surprise.
'Always to be called a 'she' rather than acknowledge that 'she' has a name. Just to say that a single wolf upon this large planet could be unnamed yet his or her actions should shout more than any mere word. A syllable.'

dry in this s e a s o n of cold
Shanahan's feet barely nipped the ground as he skirted his way through his land. This thought struck him as odd, humorous, it hadn't been his land for very long. The sky was grey and looming while the air was a bit crisp, making his nose tingle. Liftin ghis face towards the breeze took in a long sniff, no nothing, safe. The words processed through his head and he turned on his heels. Ever since the storm the packs numbers has dwindled. With the South expanding all the time, Shanahan was beginning to worry. He knew what his father would say had he been here, "You're just a child Shanahan, stop trying to be the adult!" This time was different, his father wasn't here, and Shanahan had to be the adult. all the thing she s a i d
As his thoughts began to wander to the South and over anaylze things, he smelt something. It was either really good, or really bad. First the small of a young, female loner hit his nose, to him she didn't seem such a threat. Then came his trusted healer, Fawn. Suddenly he was in top notch run, Fawn was known for her hostile behavior, especially to loners... By the time his honey orbs caught sight of the two faes he breathed a sigh. Fawn was being, well...Fawn, this loner seemed to barely even notice her presence. Shanahan smiled, Fawn was one of his most trusted and loved companions, strolling up beside her she was only half his size. Gently he nudged her shoulder and licked the top of her head. Sure she was a year and a half older then he was, but he was still the leader. c a l m, calm, calm yourself
A brisk rain had come and gone and Shan was saddened to see it go. As the shutter of the rain to to the drip drip drops a sigh of pain reached his teeth in despair. Licking his sore spot in his mouth turned and gave Fawn a watchful eye. It hadn't been but 2 weeks ago that the southern leader had betrayed them all after the storm, causing Shanahan to lose something very important, his family and his bottom left canine. However the warm smile appeared on his face as he stepped forward, black, brawny shoulders held back, "I am Shanahan, Alpha of the North, are you a loner or do you come from the south" The word tasted like acid to his mouth, the back of his throat itched and he wished he could take it back. Every mention of the South sent his gut in a knot, thinking of his brother...

"Sleep under palm trees," Quite happy as the rain had started on, the white girl lay down on the dry dirt of the overhang. She had just noticed an oddly placed pile of leaves and ferns, things she'd come to know as Healing objects, precious thing that all but disappeared in the Winter. She must've been in someone's home, or someone's stash, she suddenly realized.
Just as the thought had struck her, so too did the presence of another. Turning her head, rather on edge from surprise, jumped back in a motion to get away quickly, and hit her head on the top of the overhang. Stepping back a bit, rubbed her paw on the place. It was brownish colored now, having gotten dirt suddenly smashed onto it. It had a small throbbing pain, a bruise, but nothing serious. She hadn't broken the skin, at least.
Looking back up to the female in front of her, gave a kind smile. She felt no need to be protective around anyone. She wagged her tail a few times, then smiled and sat. Panting, a naturally coming habit of hers, she looked back out at the rain. She hoped inwardly that the wolf wouldn't terribly mind her staying there for a bit. She would leave as soon as the rain stopped, if need be.
Glancing questioningly over at the other, spoke, "Could you allow me to wait out the rainfall here? I like to listen to it, and it has a nice echo off the walls of the riverbed. My name is River, and I really wouldn't mind if you told me to leave your, uhm. Home?" Never said politely, trying to be as non-imposing as possible.
A dark shape could be seen moving through the darkness, and River's expression was blank, as she was frozen with a stupid smile on her face, confused at what was happening. Then the male ducked under the Overhang, and it was quite obvious that the duo were either mates or in the same pack. Not knowing made River uncomfortable, she could've been intruding on their private moment if they were a couple.
The rain slowly and steadily died down, and then was gone. A piece of River's heart went with it. She had been born during a fierce rainstorm, so it had always been a source of comfort for her, rather than fear.
"Ah. Oh. Uhm. I'm sorry for intruding, I'll leave now!" River panicked, thinking they were in a relationship, seeing the affection he displayed so publicly for her. Then he spoke, just as she was about to retreat into the now misty forest.
"Ah- I'm a Loner. My name's River, I've never really been around an other wolves before! It's nice to meet you, Shanahan!" River said, turning on her heels to face him, and giving a big kind smile after she finished talking.

l i t t l e by little, my friend
A warm smile spread over Shanahan's face. Poor girl, she looks tired. I wonder if she has a place to stay. As he gave her a once over he still had his doubts of the South, this wouldn't be past him to play. But his smile stayed warm and true as he walked towards her, "Well River, don't apologize, you can stay here as long as you like." With a nod he turned to look at Fawn, "This is Fawn, one of my most loyal friends and the North's healer." Giving her a reassuring smile turned back to River. She was quite pretty, seemed to be around his age as well, one and a half, perhaps she was two herself. His mind began to wander, where had she come from? What was she doing here? Was she lost? Did she have a family? Who was looking after her? Was she all alone? Shaking this out of my head he realized how much larger and probably intimidating he was to her. now when she does it like t h i s
Turning his head back to look out past the overhanging he breathed his deep sigh of pain yet again at the already clearing skies. The burden of the rain seemed to always fall on his shoulders, when it rained there was jo, when it was dry there was sorrow. Sorrow brought him pain, and pain brought him stress. Eyes squinting together his mind fleeting off, he was no longer in the North, but down South, with his brother. It brought a cold hollow feel to his chest and he turned his head, pulling himself back to reality. His stupid brother. But at the possibility of a new member his smile returned and he walked beside her, "Could you by chance be hungry? We offer our hospitality to you." The prick of doubt sent his mind in a flurry but he calmed it down with her fragile apperance. There was no way he would be stupid enough to send her down. She had to be telling the truth.

"Sleep under palm trees," 'Ah. North? South? Those aren't just directions here? Huh. I'm confused. So wait. Alpha Male. He must lead a pack called North! And then... does that mean that the South are bad guys?! Ahh... my brain hurts. Epic fail on my behalf.' River thought hopelessly, hanging her head in a tired defeat afterword. Some things were just too much for her humble mind to understand. Especially new things. And math.
River noticed how the male seemed to look at her with suspicion for a brief moment. Did he think she was a bad person? That didn't make her feel good. It made her feel a bit sad actually. It showed on her face as her smile began to wane, but then he perked up again, catching her attention from her thoughts.
'Oh! So they really are just pack friends! I was really worried I had busted in on a private moment there for a while. Really worried...' River thought innocently, just as she suddenly came to a realization. She was hungry. Wow, how rude was that? A stranger on someone else's land, and she wanted to eat their foo to boot! That was just too imposing, she wouldn't allow it!
"Ah! No! I couldn't impose myself on you so much! I won't allow you to give this worthless girl food!" River interjected, not noticing how close she had jumped toward the male until last minute. With realization, she stumbled backwards.
"I'm so sorry! Please forgive me... I really didn't mean to get so close to you, um, Shanahan." River apologized, a hopeless atmosphere around her. She had always been like that. A clutz, and speaking without thinking, making friends with anyone, many mistakes, but she usually was liked for them. She brightened the mood, she had been told once. Though, she was also quite dense. Very dense. To the point of not knowing someone liked her until they actually said it.
"Oh! If you have to give me food, then please allow me to catch it myself! I can't let you hunt for me, that's even more imposing! Even though I'm not the best hunter, I can manage to catch something small, like a Rabbit or something... maybe..." her voice faded near the end, until it was really only a whisper. She wasn't very confident in her hunting abilities. She could catch Birds, Mice, and Rabbits fairly well, but large game presented a challenge for her.

The rumble and tumble of greak billowing clouds. Tumbling and tossing each other, occasionally a distance sound of thunder was whisked into the North. The history of these storms were well known, though Fawn payed no attention to them. Golden honey eyes glanced upward tasting the air. The climax of the storm was still far off. Probably once dusk set in, lightning shafts would flash all around them.
Cream colored coat fluffed up, against the nippy weather and the fact than an intruder was among her herb supplies. Shan bumped up against her, almost rudely. Eyes sparking with something like warning bent her nose down to gather up the watermint that she had just dropped. Some pedals were strewn and stems snapped. Ears erect, tail flung up in a sign of dominance and aggression.
Watermint pushed into a pile outside the overhang, honey eyes turned back to River. Hackles pricked, not giving a damn if alpha was there or not. Rolling shoulders, bristling for a scuffle that would not come. Lip twitched, and yellow tinted canines were shown in a menacing growl. About to tell the loner off, and chase her from the overhang could of scoffed when Shan spoke.
'Offer a loner food? SHELTER? When she is trampling my precious herbs!' Snarling quite fiercely, diving into the cramp space and attempted to sink her fangs into River's hind legs. To make the loner run, to flee from the overhang into the rain and the storm. It would come to tooth an claw, irrationality whatever it took to chase what could of been a destroyer of a lifeline.
Fur fluffed up, tail tip drawing against the roof as dominance was still in place. Shooting an angry and stern look at Shan, thinking 'You pup... no understanding of her herbal or spiritual.' Licking jaw, sat down in the overhang with head bent, ears pinned, and shoulder blades poking out of her hide. Staring at River, who should of not been in the rain if Shan had any sense.
'Alpha or not... no loner shall get non-hostile treatment when their claws could of spiked and smashed my horsetail.' Fluffing up fur, which was abnormally clean for being in such a dirty and cramp space. Used to navigating in areas of this size, only paw pads were dirty, the rest remained poofed out. Lip twitching whenever she made eye contact with any of them; Fawn treated these herbs like her children. Which figuratively, would of been.

'cause if you're not really here
Shan smiled down at River, he was enjoying her company, even if Fawn was getting a little hostile. Whether he was Alpha or not, whether he was in a war or not, they could always use a little extra help. When River talked of catching her own food he chuckled, "There is no need, we have some elk still at camp, you may help yourself to that." However much they were in a drought or famine he knew he wouldn't let this poor loner starve. She seemed so helpless...so lost. He wouldn't let her be anymore. With a friendly smile he nodded towards the herbs in the corner, "What out for those, however," He whispered to her, glancing at Fawn, "She treats those herbs like her children." With a smile and a wink he held his head up again. then the stars don't even matter
Suddenly he saw Fawn snap at River out of the corner of his eye, turning about he raised his lip towards her. Yes he was like the mother he never had, and he loved Fawn dearly, but he was still Alpha. "Fawn she hasn't done anything wrong, stand down." His tone was hushed, but still stern, Shanahan was not a yeller. Normally he didn not lose his temper, but when he did it was not a fun thing to be seen. His blue orbs darted from her to River, surely she was scared out of her mind at this point. Giving her a smal, gentle nudge turned again back to Fawn. "Please Fawn, she didn't hurt your herbs, she didn't even know they were here." His stern voice was gone once again and his warm, gentle touch was back as usual. The herbs were unscathed in the corner and he stood in between the loner and his healer. now i'm filled to the top with fear
Shanahan knew what came with being Alpha, he knew the respect, responsibilty and power that came with the title. The thigns he would have to do, the choices he would have to make. He would never admit it to anyone, but he was afraid. Afraid he would make a wrong turn and someone else would have to pay the price. Afraid that he would let his pack down while the South would come out on top. Afraid he would end up alone, with nothing but his regrets. But most of all, what he knew was that to stay on top of the game, and stay in power, he would have to make some unpopular desicions. Some choices that wouldn't sit well with people but would be right for everyone. Now was not one of those times, but the future always haunted him. He had not been Alpha for more then two weeks, and already he was nervous. What would he do? What if he couldn't help anybody...
cause if you're not really here....

The rain was coming down at a steady pace now. The dry ground seemed to be refusing to suck up the water, so it started puddling at the middle of the dry riverbed. Not even an inch deep, honey colored eyes followed the pools movement. Not really caring for River, not yet anyway. Bristling as Shan started talking again, blinked and looked towards him.
Black pelt was sticking to muscular frame as water pelted at him. River was in worse shape, though the water never reached the skin. Shuffling, listened to Shan 'Fawn she hasn't done anything wrong, stand down.' Puffing herself up, spat back in a low tone "That we know of." Though Fawn knew that River hadn't done anything, it was just a maternal fierceness. To die for another pack mate, to battle sickness without cause accept a motherly love for every individual.
'Please Fawn, she didn't hurt your herbs, she didn't even know they were here.' Hackles lay relaxed again, though Fawn looked daggers at Shan then to River, back to Shan. Heaving a sigh, let herself relax. Rolling her shoulders looked more like the elegant female that she did on a day-to-day basis. Pink tongue flicking out and swiping across jaw coudl still taste herbs. Honey colored eyes twinkling, said in an exasperated tone. "You've only just hit maturity, so in my eyes you're still a pup. You maybe be alpha, but it's a word. Not a right."
Turning away, didn't know if she felt any loyalty to Shan or not. When she had joined a year ago, the black mass had been a year old. A stupid little yearling strutting about the place like he knew everything. When he took the Alpha position right before maturity, Fawn thought the world had gone made. Give a cocky youngster such a powerful title. Admitting Shan had sensed up. But he still had a lot to learn. Fawn was never a leader, though she had lived by herself for most of her life. Never learning to follow orders, only recognize when to walk away and when to fight.
Tail brushing herbs together, neatly stacked them int he cave. It stank of River, though it wasn't an overall horrible scent. It lacked the proper amount of sea salt that was tinged in all of the North's pelts but it didn't matter. If anything it reminded her of a pine forest, filled with pine cones and thick sap. Cream colored fur still dirt-less, turned back to Shan and River. Not really caring about anything from here on out. 'Great impression, eh Fawn?'

"Sleep under palm trees," River listened as Shan spoke. "A-alright." She said, fairly non-confident. She really had hoped she wouldn't have to take food from their pack, it was so rude. But since they had offered it, and insisted, it was alright... right?
Then, just as Shan had whispered to her about the herbs, Fawn nipped her on the leg. She jumped back in surprise, but she understood, and was forgiving. She watched while Shan scolded the older Fawn, and she snapped back at him. They had a good relationship, they had to be good friends.
The rain had started up again, and since River hadn't moved back under the overhang, she was getting wet. Moving forward toward Fawn, showed no aggression or unfriendliness, simply worry.
"I'm sorry! If you want, I'll help you find more herbs! I can find anything if I know what it looks like!" River offered, worried she might have destroyed something important to the Northern pack. Even if she hadn't actually hurt any of the herbs, she was still worried. It was just in her nature to overly worry.

a' that you only m e a n t well
Shan glanced over at Fawn, she might have only been a half year older then him, but she sure as hell thought she knew so much more. However mad she was at him right now he grinned, knwing her anger would soon subside. He watched her relax a little and then drew his attention back towards River. She seemed like a sweet enough girl, pray tell she was still getting wet. Furrowing his brow he walked over and smiled, "Don't worry about the food," After a pause he added, "Or Fawn. She just gets a bit nippy." He gave Fawn a wink and turned back. How he loved these lands, the forest, the smell, the ocean. He definatly loved his ocean. A sudden jerk in his heart filled him with worry and he looked away, fearing it showed on his face. But after he cleared his throat he turned back and smiled at the two ladies. "We will wait here till the rain clears up, then we will head back to camp." well of c o u r s e you did
Shanahan turned back to the hanging foliage, walking over and sitting down right behind it. His nose stuck through a small opening and it was immidiatly dribbled with the sweet sensation of rain. He knew it wouldn't last and this made his eyes narrow, but soften, sorrow filling them. As he stared at the rain he couldn't help but think that somehow, this was his fault. He was too young, he shouldn't be in the position he was in, someone better for the job should be here. Like his father, everyone had loved his father. Or his adopted father anyways, he had always know what to do. Well that is...before he went rogue. This thought brought bloody images back to his head so he shook them away, sending the droplets on his muzzle to fly about the space. so baby w h a t c h a say?
Turning his body he gave, this time, a weak smile towards Fawn and the same one in River's direction. By now he knew that River would come back to camp and would soon become a Northerner, it wasn't hard to guess. Maybe that was why he cared so little if she ate their food and drank their water. He knew that eventually Fawn would soften up to her and they would become closer. Everything would be okay, or a version, of okay very soon. So why did it feel so wrong?

Fawn watched Shan, how he seemed to be having an internal battle. Swiping her tail across his flank in a soothing way, didn't make eye contact. But stared at her herbs, all neatly stacked. The rain pitter pattered outside, yet it seemed to be growing lighter, more distant. Ears pricked looked out beyind the overhand. You could only see the small pellets of rain if you really narrowed your eyes and concentrated.
Shifting, grabbed the essence in her jaw and squeezed fromt he den. Small beads of rain collected on the end of her fur, but never touched skin. Blinking at the other two, was ready to go back to camp. Not only to deposit the herbal essence, but to sink her fangs into some meat. For Fawn didn't eat before she went out, one of the odd aspects of Fawn in the morning hours.

"Sleep under palm trees," Even though the water clung to River's silky pelt, it never did reach her skin, it was falling far too softly now. She looked up at the sky, at the black and gray clouds that were drifting further and further away, carrying rain to some other wolves who needed it. Across an ocean, through a forest, over mountain, plains, hills. Even human cities, nothing could stop the rain from going where it pleased. Somewhere in the world, rain was falling down. Knowing that, River could be happy and content for the rest of her life.
Looking over at Shan, noticed his brief, but troubled expression, It worried her, but she said nothing. He was a year older than her, and Fawn was a half year older than him. She was clearly not among others of her age, even though they didn't seem to dislike her. That made her feel a bit lonely, she would've liked to have someone her age around. Even a younger pup would've been nice, they were always fun to have around.
As the rain faded even more, then finally stopped altogether, River found herself brought back to her thoughts. Fawn had began to walk away, taking with her the herbs, that she carried gingerly in her mouth. With a short sprint, River caught up, splashing through a few small puddles, sending droplets of mud water spewing from the sides and onto her white fur. She licked them off quickly, then followed Fawn hastily.
"I really am sorry. It would be horrible if someone hurt your children. I'll make sure to look out for them in the future, alright? Please don't be mad." River told Fawn, walking at pace with her, and her tone was apologetic. She really had meant no harm, and she wanted her to know that.
She looked over at Shan. "Is it really okay if I have some of your food? There isn't much around here, so I don't think I should take any from you, it seems so rude..." She mumbled toward him.

Shan watched Fawn take her herbs ginerly and begin walking away, and he sighed, knowing this meant that the rain would soon cease and they would soon have to return to camp. She didn't say anything so he knew not whether she was irritated or not. Not that he truly cared, he knew whatever it was she would soon get over it. River bounded out after her and he sighed, pulling himself up and walking forward into the drizzle. It didn't last long and soon they were simply walking in the mushy ground with the light clouds parting to reveal that awful sun. He walked slightly behind the females, almost in a protective manner, his tail swishing back and forth, eyes darting about in check. everything is n e v e r as it seems
When River spoke to Fawn he merely rolled his eyes, you don't need to apologize to her, he wanted to say, but held his tongue in case Fawn was in a snippy mood. As he went back into survalliance mode, River spoke to him and he glanced her way, his head held up, "Trully, i would be insulted if you refuse." His smile caught on his face and he turned back and looked around before looking back at the two in front of him. Nothing seemed to be around, so he felt safe, for now.

Padding lightly, carrying a torso like the wind would lift leaves. Honey eyes fixed forward, jaw slack yet firm enough to grip the herbs. Not really aware of anything going on around her, heard a splash and a clatter of paws. Blinking, darted tot he side as River replaced where she had been standing a moment before. Ears gave a flick, more in acknowledgment of her movements.
Noticing that Shan was tagging behind, could of snorted but didn't. Planning to just ignore River less she was addressed heard the white female's apology. Muffled, for essence filled jaw, said. "Don't apologize, it doesn't make a difference. And for the record herbs aren't my children." Bristling at the fact that they though anything could replace a precious pup. How naive they all were. 'All of them.'
Not planning on speaking against until belly was full, listened to River babble on about food. 'Northern food.' Her flowing gait sped up leaving River behind as she weaved in and out of the trees. The thick scent of wolf striking her nose, ears pricked marched forward squeezing inbetween two trees to walk into a clearing. Dens and boulders were here and there, and without a glance backwards at Shan and River marched up to an assortment of rocks with a fern lichen. Passing through the lichen, placed herbs in their according shelves in the rock. It was a sturdy structure safe from the weather and elements.
Turning tail, stretched and felt much more comfortable now that her paws were back where so many scents were familiar. Yawning, started grooming muddy paws before the scent of meat hit her nose. Looking around for Serenade or Umit dived forward into the midst of meat. Growling and snapping her way past the other two, grabbed a slab of meat and taking it outside her herb storage, also her den. Laying down, started ripping off pieces and chewing on the breast piece.
